Addictive behaviours



When we think of addiction, we think of substances, drugs and alcohol for instance. However, addictive behaviour can come in many forms, maybe shopping or gambling, and all these behaviours share similarities, regardless of the substance or behaviour involved.


Most people who have an addiction of any form will probably have tried to stop their addictive behaviour, only to return to it hours, days, weeks or months later.




The trap of addiction



We become addicted as the substance or behaviour serves a purpose for us at first and meets our expectations. At some point it might have served to help us escape a harsh reality, maybe it helped us fit in with a social group or made strong, unpleasant emotions easier to cope with. Perhaps it started as a reward for a hard day or week - a little recreation. However at some point the reward has become a prison, a cycle of behaviour that can feel as if it is controlling and destroying your life.
